How to evaluate a UGC creator portfolio before hiring

By UseHype · Brand campaign guides

Evaluate a UGC portfolio against your brief: product clarity, audience fit, usable production quality and evidence of the creator’s own contribution. Follower count alone does not answer those questions.

Choose the closest sample

Review a sample in the format you need. An attractive fashion photograph does not establish that a creator can explain a software product on camera. Ask for an example that demonstrates the missing skill rather than assuming it transfers.

For a skincare demonstration, look for clear product handling and an understandable sequence. Do not infer product effectiveness from lighting, editing or a creator’s appearance.

Review once as a customer, then as a producer

On the first viewing, note what the product does and what action the viewer is invited to take. On the second, check audio, focus, framing, captions and pacing. Watch on a phone, where small text and busy backgrounds can be harder to read.

  • Opening establishes a relevant reason to watch
  • Product and key action remain visible
  • Speech is understandable without straining
  • Captions are accurate and readable
  • Ending matches the intended next step

Separate creative skill from performance claims

Ask what the creator contributed: concept, script, appearance, filming or editing. Self-directed samples are valid evidence of craft when labelled clearly. They are not proof of a commercial relationship with the featured brand.

If performance is offered as evidence, ask which metric, period and distribution it represents. Paid promotion, organic reach and sales attribution are different. A screenshot without context cannot predict your campaign’s return.

Use consistent review notes

For each shortlist candidate, record strengths, gaps and one question to resolve. Avoid ranking creators by taste alone: judge against the same required format and audience.

If no portfolio demonstrates the exact job, discuss a small paid pilot with clear acceptance criteria. Do not request substantial free production as an application task. Confirm whether the resulting content may be used and under what terms.
